Reducing Leachable Components in Waterborne Architectural Paints

The composition of waterborne paints and coatings rely on several surface active or water soluble components for their production, stability and performance. Unfortunately these ingredients can migrate to the paint surface leaving visible streaks referred to as “Surfactant Leaching/Staining” or “Snail Trails”. Staining typically occurs after the paint has been exposed to specific conditions such as high humidity and water condensation. The presence of water on a paint surface can concentrate leachable materials into a non-uniform pattern of visible glossy streaks. A careful selection of formulation ingredients can help reduce the extent of staining.
