DMPA es un sólido cristalino inodoro, de flujo libre, que ofrece ventajas superiores en la formulación y el procesamiento de resinas solubles en agua. Este producto tiene un equivalente de neutralización de 141,0 como máx., una temperatura de descomposición de 230 °C y una cantidad insoluble en agua de 50,0 ppm como máx. La estructura de neopentilo de este compuesto trifuncional, que tiene dos grupos hidroxilo primarios y un grupo carboxílico terciario, facilita el procesamiento simplificado, lo que permite la combinación de todos los reactivos en una sola carga. El buen control de la reacción es posible debido a una tasa de esterificación más lenta del carboxilo terciario, lo que asegura una distribución uniforme de los grupos carboxilo a lo largo de la cadena principal de la resina.
