From the reaction of the nitroparaffins with formaldehyde, this compound, also known as nitrohydroxy compound, is produced, containing one nitro group and from one to three methylol groups. This product is 2-Nitro-1-butanol. NB™ is stable at ambient temperatures but decomposes when heated. Under alkaline conditions, it can yield formaldehyde at a rate which can be controlled by pH and temperature adjustment; thus allowing this product to find use as a formaldehyde donor in adhesives or polymers where the controlled availability of formaldehyde is essential for improved performance and minimization of odor. view less

It is most useful as a chemical intermediate for organic synthesis. Because of the acidity of its α-hydrogen atoms, this product undergoes many base-catalyzed addition and condensation reactions. Such reactions are convenient for the introduction of nitro groups into molecules. NE™ also has solvency properties of particular interest for specialty applications. It is an excellent solvent for a wide variety of organic compounds and for resins, such as acrylic and vinyl resins, used in coatings and inks. It can also be used as solvent for the extraction of rosin from wood. view less
